O vive lui! chaque fois

Que chante le coq gaullois!

When Paul got back to the hotel, he went to the dining-room and waited for a long time. At last Ernst appeared. Paul explained that he had got up early to have a swim. Ernst looked solemn. He said he was upset because the pimple on his cheek had got worse. They ordered breakfast. Paul ordered two fried eggs, an ‘extra’ not provided for by the hotel (price included in bill) breakfast of coffee, rolls and butter. He felt two fried eggs were payment due to him. They discussed their visit to Castor and Lisa Alerich to see their house. Ernst surprised Paul by saying, ‘Since we have to go by train that long journey to Hamburg this evening, I thought that after our restless night it would be too exhausting to go the two hours’ journey to the Alerichs’ village in the little local train, so I have ordered a car. I am afraid neither of us slept much last night: it was like that night you once described to me, when you were with your friend Marston.’ Two hours later, when they were seated in the car and Ernst, driving, had changed into top gear along the smooth, sandy road through the pine forest, he said, ‘Last night, you seemed so innocent and natural and spontaneous, Paul.’
